Our School Uniform Grant was developed in response to feedback from local schools reflecting the needs of families in Newcastle facing financial hardship.
We engage and work with Parent Support Workers in 10 local West End primary and secondary schools in order to reduce the stigma and risk of social isolation and exclusion in schools.
All our local schools have a uniform policy and purchasing school uniform can be a significant expense for families that are hard hit by the changes in welfare benefits or for those who are new to our community. If a child is at school without the correct school uniform, there’s a huge risk of social isolation which can have a profound and lasting effect on the child.
Through our grant to schools, Parent Support Workers can target assistance to those who need it most.
They’ve continually provided evidence to us of multiple positive outcomes from our fund, including increased engagement between schools and families where barriers have existed previously.
“The grant ensures children feel part of school and are the same as their friends. Changes to the benefits system has impacted significantly with more families struggling financially.”
